2bd Prize Double Bass 2023 Hongyiu Thomas Lai, Hong Kong
· Biography
Born in Hong Kong in 1997, double bassist Hong Yiu Thomas Lai graduated from the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg in 2022 with Dorin Marc, and subsequently began his Master of Music double bass studies at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold with Stanislav Anischenko. He began his musical education at the age of four playing the piano. Hong Yiu Thomas Lai has already gathered experience with the Göttinger Symphonie Orchester, the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Philharmonia Zürich. Hong Yiu Thomas Lai, who was already a participant in the ARD Musikwettbewerb in 2016, has been playing as a permanent principal double bass with the NDR Radiophilharmonie since 2021. He was awarded the second prize as well as the audience award at the 72. ARD International Music Competition in Munich.
