AI for Media Network Show & Tell Workshop on AI Models and Training Data for Journalistic Use Cases
Journalism meets science: In a workshop on January 18, 2024, Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Technical University of Munich want to find out how both sides can work together to develop AI models and methods for journalistic use cases.
The AI + Automation Lab, BR Data, and BR Recherche are three teams at Bayerischer Rundfunk that work at the interface between technology and journalism. They use forms of automation and AI for investigative methods and for product development of journalistic formats such as automated texts, graphics, or news briefings.

In a network called AI for Media, this work is made ,compatible: Where can we share knowledge? How can we connect talents from science and journalism? And which data content or public service training data could be made usable for other institutions with a public service mission?
The network reaches out to media practitioners and universities. For this reason, Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Munich Data Science Institute of Technical University of Munich (TUM) are teaming up for a workshop to explore possible collaborations on use cases and methods. The workshop is targeted to media practitioners and scientists using AI and machine learning for use cases that can augment the media industry. The results of the workshop will form the basis for a hackathon in spring diving deeper into the intersection of science and journalism in the machine learning era.
Show & Tell workshop January 18, 2024
The Show & Tell workshop will take place on January 18, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), Rundfunkplatz 1, 80335 Munich.
BR's AI + Automation Lab and other BR teams at the intersection of tech and journalism will present their data and machine learning projects. TUM is responsible for the scientific part and has published a Call for Applications for contributions to the workshop. We are looking for researchers and journalists working on machine learning projects applicable to journalism, for example:
- Language Models for Text Services in Journalism
- Training of dialect language models
- Data to Text, Data to Graphics Projects
- Automated audio fragmentation and tagging
- Facial recognition in video content to extract metadata
- Image or pattern recognition for investigations, e.g. in satellite imagery
Applications are not limited to the Technical University of Munich, all persons who are working on a suitable project can apply.

Show & Tell-Workshop zu KI-Modellen und Trainingsdaten für journalistische Use Cases
Journalismus trifft Wissenschaft: In einem Workshop am 18.1.2024 will der Bayerische Rundfunk zusammen mit der TU München herausfinden, wie beide Seiten bei der Entwicklung von KI-Modellen und Methoden für journalistische Use Cases zusammenarbeiten können.
Das AI + Automation Lab, BR Data und BR Recherche sind drei Teams beim Bayerischen Rundfunk, die an der Schnittstelle zwischen Technologie und Journalismus arbeiten. Sie nutzen Formen der Automatisierung und KI für investigative Methoden sowie zur Produktentwicklung von journalistischen Formaten wie automatisierten Texten, Grafiken oder Newsbriefings.
In einem Netzwerk namens AI for Media soll diese Arbeit anschlussfähig gemacht werden: Welche Modelle, die die Teams trainieren, könnten von anderen Medienhäusern genutzt werden? Welche öffentlich-rechtlichen Trainingsdaten könnten für andere Institutionen mit gesellschaftlichem Auftrag nutzbar gemacht werden?
Auch Universitäten sollen Teil des Netzwerks sein. Deswegen veranstaltet der Bayerische Rundfunk zusammen mit dem Munich Data Science Institute der Technischen Universität München (TUM) einen Workshop, der eine mögliche Zusammenarbeit bei Use Cases und Methoden ausloten soll.

Der Show & Tell-Workshop findet am 18. Januar 2024 von 10 – 16 Uhr beim Bayerischen Rundfunk (BR), Rundfunkplatz 1, 80335 München statt.
Das AI + Automation Lab des BR wird einige seiner aktuellen Projekte vorstellen. Für den wissenschaftlichen Part ist die TUM zuständig, die einen Call for Applications für Beiträge zum Workshop veröffentlicht hat. Gesucht werden Forschende, die zu einem der folgenden Themengebiete arbeiten:
- Sprachmodelle für Textdienste im Journalismus
- Training von Dialekt-Sprachmodellen
- Data to Text, Data to Graphics Projekte
- Automatisierte Audiofragmentierung und Tagging
- Gesichtserkennung in Videoinhalten zur Extraktion von Metadaten
- Bild- oder Mustererkennung für Ermittlungen, z. B. in Satellitenbildern
Bewerbungen sind nicht auf die TU München beschränkt, alle Personen, die an einem passenden Projekt forschen, können sich bewerben.
